That’s a Wrap!

Ryerson, I hate to say it…

It’s been a great 9 months being your source of social media content…

I loved the fact that my weird, but somewhat useful, blogs were well received :)…*ahem* I hope so!

I hope that you learned something new, whether it’s where the nearest Tim Horton’s is to you on campus or how to save some money as a student…something…

I want you to know…that I…

I…*tear*

Will miss *tear* you.

And I hate to say it…but my time is done.

Some things for YOU to do is:

1. http://www.ryerson.ca/studentservices/trimentoring/ spread the word. The Tri-Mentoring Program is such a great resource that many don’t know about yet! Know any new students enrolling at Ryerson? Spread the word! Word.

2. Make sure keep checking back for updates and to see who your new social media brain will be and welcome him/her with open arms!

3. Make sure to keep up with our tweets on events and scholarships around campus…and just for laughs!

4. Entering 3rd or 4th year? Sign up for Career Mentoring! https://www.runner.ss.ryerson.ca/trimentoring/careerMenteeProfile.cfm

Oh look, how convenient…there’s the registration form…how’d that get there…
But truthfully, if you want to connect with industry professionals to help mentor you in your field or just about getting your career started, Career Mentoring is where you can do that! Take advantage!!!

5. Get your summer clothes out from the boxes, get the moth smell out, because summer is right around the corner!!

Have a great summer and make sure to utilize your resources! Signing up for a program at Ryerson will connect you to great people and opportunities you never knew existed!

I don’t want to say goodbye, but I have to go graduate now…It’s been fun Ryerson!

THAT’S WHAT’S UP!

Do you remember Chia Pets? You take them out of the box, water them and they grow…FAST. Well I think Sheldon Levy has taken Ryerson out of the box and watered it.

Downtown Toronto doesn’t have much room for new buildings, so expanding is kind of hard isn’t it? How are we supposed to compete with campuses like UofT that take up majority of the real estate downtown? Answer: Ryerson Sprawl. Not Urban Sprawl, Ryerson Sprawl.

In the past years not only has Ryerson added the Rogers Communications Centre and Ted Rogers School of Management to their repertoire, but more recently the Peter Gilgan Athletic Centre along with what will be the Ryerson University Student Learning Centre at the corner of Yonge St. and Gould St. These additions will make for a larger campus and a larger dot on the University map within Canada. Through these new facilities, Ryerson will be able to host events at a much larger scale.

Our University leaders are thinking BIG and the Ryerson community gets to go along for the ride.

Next time anyone asks, “Why did you go to Ryerson?”

I think an appropriate answer will be, “Why not?”

That’s what’s up!

Inspire, Because You Can.

It’s hard isn’t it? To be so consumed by our own problems, goals, work? But it’s the times when we take a step out of our own world to help others when we truly accomplish something.

“The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good” -Ann Landers

As Mentors and Mentees, we are developing leaders within ourselves and in others. Every leader has been taught how to stand and walk on their own, only to show and teach others as well. What makes a leader?

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” -John Quincy Adams

If by pushing in our chair when we stand makes others feel that they should to, we have struck a chord. At Ryerson our Tri-Mentoring program tries to do just that. With the help of our students we are building a community, a family, a helping hand.

As the second semester roles around and the weather gets a little worse, it’s hard to stay positive and happy especially when it’s dark out by 5pm.

Here’s my challenge for you Ryerson:

Do something nice for someone at least once a day. This can be opening the door for someone, picking up something they dropped or even give them a pat on the back.

When you do it, I want you to comment and tell us what you did. It might give others ideas on how to be a helping hand to their peers. Sharing is caring.

That’s what’s up!

Toodles,

Carli

December 6th 1989 was a day that 14 women (13 of who were in Engineering) were gunned down at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. Since then December 6th has become Canada’s National day of Remembrance and & Action on Violence against Women.

In the tribute to the women whose lives were taken on this sad day, the Tri-Mentoring program has been telling the story of the females in our program. This last video of our 3 part series looks at some of the challenges that female students face on campus within post secondary education & what we can do to help make change.

The Faculty of Engineering Architecture & Sciences is one of the faculty at Ryerson University that suffers from a huge gender disparity in its enrollment. Lets meet one of the students from this faculty and hear her story.

Sid Naidu - Mentoring Officer - Tri-Mentoring Program

Our second student profile featuring the Women in the Tri-Mentoring Program is a story about an art Student and the challenges she has faces as a female who is taking up leadership roles in post secondary education. This presentation was initially presented at our yearly Student Community Life Talks #SCLx11 and the topic was done in tribute to the TEDxWomen event that happened globally and at Ryerson University.

Relax, Take a Break!

Hey Ryerson! Who has an exam coming up?! (Everyone raises both hands) Yup, everybody is stressing out! Study, study, assignment, study! Does this sound about right?

Even though we have exams coming up we have to remember to BREATHE! TAKE A BREAK and go GRAB A SNACK!  If you remember from our previous blog post a lot of students told us that they like to eat to help themselves de-stress. It might not only help you relax, but also help you focus!

SO! Here’s a list of favourite snacks and estimated costs!

Self made trail mix - Buy some nuts, buy some raisins mix them together and BAM! You have snack! Just a tip, buying a pack of Smarties and throwing it in there is a good call too. Delicious! Estimated cost: $8-$14 depends on which nuts you buy BUT you should be able to make enough for at least 3 study sessions!

Fruit - Grab some plums, apples, clementines or whatever your preference is, but fruit makes for great snacks and energy boosters. Keep in mind that if you’re going to be studying for a long period of time, don’t slice your fruit. It gets all mushy and they lose their juiciness. Just put a couple in a bag, no slicing needed! Estimated cost: $5

Dry Cereal - Who says you always need milk?! Honey Nut Cheerios and Honey Nut Chex are very popular. Just pour some on your way out of the house and you can snack on them all day long! Estimated cost: $5-$7

Candy - Who doesn’t love sweets?! Gummies are always a good choice. Not the healthiest…Try to get it in bulk so that you can give yourself options because you can get sick of eating the same candy over and over. Plus, bulk can be cheaper. Estimated cost: $3-$5

Smart Food - now, prior to what some think, Smart Food does not increase your IQ….it’s just popcorn. BUT it’s really delicious and it’s a great and loved study snack. Estimated cost: $4

Granola Bars - My favourite are Nature Valley Fruit and Nut bars. Granola bars are great for snacking and the combination of granola, nuts and sugars can definitely help when hunger calls! it’ll tie you over until you want to pack p and have a full meal. Estimated cost: $2-$4

Crackers - Ritz, Vegetable Thins, Triscuits, you get the idea. Make sure you have some water with you though, you can get pretty thirsty munching on these for over an hour. The salt will keep you satisfied. Estimated cost: $3-$4

I’m sure you have your own favourite snack that keeps you going, feel free to share! Sharing is caring! That’s what’s up!

That’s it for now, toddles!

Carli

I’m sure everyone has their own snack that helps them study, feel free to share!

TMP Turns 10 Gala Wrap Up!

Our very own Patricia Nip wraps up the wonderful evening that was the TMP Turns 10 Gala! Enjoy!

Creating communities and transforming tomorrow. Tri-Mentoring celebrates its 10 Year Anniversary for an evening at Delta Chelsea. Mentees, mentors, alumni, staff and community partners were brought together to celebrate the achievements and success of the program.

The guests arrived at the hall for the cocktail reception meeting old friends, former colleagues, taking pictures at the booth. Around the room were displays of pictures and memories from the decade.  Dinner and performances were at the Churchill Ballroom where tables represented TMP colours’ red, black and white.

Speeches and remarks were given by Kabir Abdurrahman, Rona Abramovitch, Heather Lane Vetere, Marion Creery, and Liza Arnason. We also thank all the wonderful students involved in the performances that night: Opening Drummers, poetry piece by Lola Lawson, duet by Jaclyn and Jyotsna and the TMP’s Dance Crew to end the night. The evening continued on with an open dance floor with our very own DJ Kareem Rahaman (and someoen else?) We also thank the wonderful staff at TMP who has worked hard to plan this event.

Pictures from TMP Turns 10 are posted on our facebook page:
